Introduction
The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and in published in 1925, is a novel focused on the disillusionment following WWI. Fitzgerald's novel depicts the faults of society in the 1920's through the use of symbolism. Fitzgerald's characters and based-on-real-life geographies represent different aspects of the social decay that took place during the Roaring 20's.
This website will explain symbols and motifs found in The Great Gatsby and why they are included in the text. Events from the 1920's and Fitzgerald's life are represented by symbols in the book. I have included my interpretations of the connections between these events and the symbols found in the book.
